Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II has ordered the immediate apprehension of vehicles caught overspeeding on expressways, emphasizing real-time enforcement to prevent fatal accidents.

In a meeting held on Tuesday, May 6 with expressway operators and managers, Mendoza directed expressway enforcers to act swiftly against drivers who violate speed limits.

Under the new directive, vehicles monitored to be overspeeding via speed guns or surveillance equipment must be apprehended immediately — and not only when they reach toll exits, which is the current practice.

“We need to be proactive and quick in our response,” Mendoza said.

“If overspeeding is detected, efforts must be made to apprehend violators right away to avoid possible accidents. Waiting until the toll exit is too risky, as accidents may already happen in between,” he continued.

Mendoza stressed the importance of heightened visibility and active monitoring by enforcers on all expressways, as part of the Marcos administration’s campaign to strengthen road safety nationwide.

Citing data from the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), he revealed that 13 percent of over 31,000 road crashes recorded in 2024 occurred on expressways. Alarmingly, nearly all of these incidents resulted in fatalities.

“We really need to do more,” Mendoza told the expressway managers.

“As our deputized enforcers, you share our duty and mandate to ensure the safety of motorists and everyone using expressways at all times,” the LTO Chief said.
