Tensions escalated between the Philippine National Police (PNP) and militant groups at EDSA Ortigas this afternoon, February 25, amid the Trillion Peso March, which coincides with the 40th anniversary commemorations of the EDSA People Power Revolution.
DZRH reporter Val Gonzales reported the incident occurred around 2:57 p.m., with scuffles breaking out between protesters and police personnel.
According to Atty. Aaron Pedrosa, Secretary General of Sanlakas, the police requested the protesters to clear a lane for traffic. However, he claimed the demonstrators were forcibly pushed while complying with the request.
“Kaya nakakagalit… Madali kaming kausapin pero bakit ganyan kayo? Parang atat na atat paluin kami, atat na atat idispurse kami? Ganyan ba ‘yung policy ng maximum tolerance?” Pedrosa told DZRH.
The tension led to the arrest of two individuals from separate militant groups—one from Samahan ng Progresibong Kabataan (SPARK) and another from the Philippine Alliance of Human Rights Advocates (PAHRA)—who are now in the custody of the Eastern Police District, according to Pedrosa.
The PNP has yet to comment regarding the incident.
Earlier, the police declared “all systems go” for security preparations surrounding the planned rallies and commemorative activities for the EDSA anniversary.
Authorities remain on red alert as demonstrations continue in key areas of Metro Manila.
