The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has placed its units on “red alert” status in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution on Wednesday, February 25.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa on MBC TV Network News, despite saying that there are no monitored threats related to the scheduled gatherings of various groups, the military said the alert is a precautionary measure to ensure readiness.
In a press conference at Camp Aguinaldo, AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Padilla said the red alert status allows the military to prepare for possible deployment should the Philippine National Police (PNP) require augmentation.
“Ibig sabihin niyan, naka-standby na ang ating tropa for any eventuality. Ang resources natin, tropes are ready for deployment if needing po augmenting pa rin tayo under our NCR command,” Padilla said.
The AFP declared a full alert beginning February 21, which is expected to remain in effect as the military continues to monitor activities related to the anniversary.
Earlier, the AFP spokesperson also disclosed that the military is monitoring several individuals allegedly attempting to discredit the institution.
For its part, the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Metro Manila has declared “all systems go“ and also placed its units on “full alert“ status since Saturday.
National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Police General Anthony Aberin conducted a final walkthrough at the EDSA Shrine, along with personnel from the Eastern Police District, to inspect security arrangements in the area.
Authorities have declared the EDSA Shrine a “no rally zone” due to its status as private property. However, several groups are still expected to hold programs at the site.
Based on monitoring from Camp Crame, at least three groups are planning to stage protest actions at the EDSA Shrine, while a smaller group is set to hold a demonstration in the Ortigas area.
The expected rallies are not part of the program authorized by the Quezon City Government, which has approved a separate main event to be held in White Plains starting at 7:00 a.m.
Security forces assured the public that coordination between the AFP and PNP remains in place to ensure peaceful and orderly observance of the historic anniversary.
