Following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.'s directive to make public transport more convenient for commuters, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) launched cashless payment today, July 25.
In an announcement made by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Vince Dizon last May 2025, he said that they are set to roll out cashless-enabled turnstiles under the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system.
According to Dizon, passengers only need to tap their phone or card at the turnstile to access the train.
“Nakikita na naman natin ito sa ibang bansa. So, iyon ang sabi ng ating Pangulo, gawin na rin natin ‘yung mga modern facilities sa ibang bansa dito para sa mga kababayan natin,” Dizon said.
After consultations with transport operators and financial service providers, commuters can now utilize this new payment method for train rides. Each MRT-3 station will feature one turnstile for e-wallet payments and debit and credit card payments.
Additionally, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is providing free Wi-Fi services to MRT-3 commuters to support the cashless payment initiative.
Cashless payment options are also expected to be introduced at LRT-1 and LRT-2 stations in the coming months.
