Double medalist Jeus Gabriel Derick Yape has been chosen as Team Philippines’ flag bearer for the closing ceremony of the 20th Asian Games on Sunday, following his gold medal-winning performance in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino said the 22-year-old Yape earned the distinction after securing the country’s fourth gold medal of the Games.
The closing ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. Manila time on October 4 at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium.
Yape won the Philippines’ fourth gold medal in the Games after ruling the Mixed Individual Virtual Taekwondo competition on Friday. The open-gender event combines combat sports with virtual reality and motion-tracking technology.
The victory also helped the Philippine taekwondo team secure a historic 1-3-1 medal haul in Nagoya, its first Asian Games gold in the sport since 1994, when taekwondo became a medal event in the continental Games.
Yape also won a bronze medal in the men’s individual poomsae event.
“He’s deserving for that honor,” Tolentino said.
“It will be a recognition not only for Jeus, but also for taekwondo, which finally won its first Asian Games gold medal since 1994, when the sport became a medal event in the Games,” he added.
Joining Yape in the closing ceremony parade are fellow Philippine silver medalists Juliana Mykhail Candelaria, Tachiana Keizha Mangin and Kurt Bryan Barbosa, all from taekwondo, and boxer Carlo Paalam.
As of Saturday, the Philippines remained 16th in the initial Asian Games medal tally with 28 medals — four gold, eight silver and 16 bronze.
Mangin and Barbosa added two silver medals for the Philippines in taekwondo on Friday.
