AFP raises red alert across Metro Manila units amid ongoing INC rally

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has placed all its units in the National Capital Region under Red Alert status as authorities continue to monitor the ongoing rally of members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), particularly near the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City.

AFP Public Affairs Office chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad said the heightened alert is a standard operational measure intended to ensure the military is prepared to provide assistance to civilian authorities if necessary.

“This standard measure keeps AFP personnel and assets prepared to support civil authorities when requested,” Trinidad said.

According to the AFP, the Red Alert status is aimed at maintaining operational readiness and does not indicate that the military is taking over law enforcement functions, which remain under the jurisdiction of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The military also reiterated its recognition of every Filipino's constitutional right to peacefully assemble while reminding organizers to ensure that demonstrations comply with existing laws and regulations.

The AFP further urged rally organizers to avoid disrupting public order and causing unnecessary inconvenience to commuters, workers, students, and other members of the public.

The heightened military readiness comes as security agencies continue to monitor the mass gathering organized by INC members, which earlier caused heavy traffic congestion along portions of EDSA.

Earlier in the day, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said the initial assembly along EDSA proceeded without prior coordination or a rally permit, resulting in traffic disruptions.

Later on Tuesday, however, the Quezon City government approved a rally permit allowing the demonstration to continue along White Plains Avenue until 8:00 p.m. on July 1, subject to conditions including maintaining traffic flow, observing public order, and complying with directives from authorities. The permit estimates attendance of up to 100,000 participants and may be revoked in emergency situations or if organizers fail to comply with its conditions.

The AFP emphasized that it remains a professional and non-partisan institution, committed to supporting peace, public safety, and the rule of law while respecting the constitutional rights of all Filipinos.
