President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has vowed on Monday that the government will bring former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co back to the Philippines, saying his return will be carried out in accordance with the law so he can face allegations linked to flood control scandal.
In a Facebook post, Marcos confirmed that Co remains in the custody of Czech authorities.
“Magbibigay na ako sa inyo ng pahayag tungkol sa kalagayan ni Zaldy Co na nanatili po siya sa kustodiya ng Czech Republic. At isinasagawa natin ang lahat ng mga kinakailangang hakbang para sa kanyang pagbalik dito sa Pilipinas,“ Marcos said.
Co was reportedly arrested in Prague on April 16 after being found without sufficient travel documents. Authorities have since kept him under custody while legal procedures are being reviewed.
The President said the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) have been instructed to lead coordination efforts with Czech authorities to ensure that proper legal processes are followed, according to the President.
“Inutusan ko ang Department of Justice kasama ang Department of Foreign Affairs na pangunahan ang pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga otoridad ng Czech Republic upang matiyak na maayos at naayon sa proseso ang lahat ng kinakailangan,” Marcos said.
He added that a "high-level coordination team" will also be deployed to monitor developments and assist in the process.
“Ang ganitong mga proseso ay may sinusunod ng mga legal na hakbang sa pagitan ng mga bansa, kaya't nangangailangan na sapat na panahon upang maisagawa ng tama,” the President said.
Marcos stressed that Co’s return to the country will be done in accordance with the law
“We will bring Zaldy Co home and we will do so in accordance with the law. He will answer to the Filipino people,” Marcos said.
