Several areas across the Philippines suspended classes on Friday, July 24, as Tropical Storm Kiyapo intensified and enhanced the southwest monsoon, or habagat, bringing widespread rains.

Areas with no classes (all levels, public and private):

• Banga, South Cotabato

• Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte (shift to alternative learning mode)

• Maguindanao del Norte (no face-to-face classes)

• Maguindanao del Sur (shift to alternative learning mode)

• Silay City, Negros Occidental (no face-to-face classes)

• Pigcawayan, Cotabato

• Sultan Kudarat (no face-to-face classes; effective until lifted)

• Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte

As of 5 a.m., Kiyapo intensified into a tropical storm as it moved toward extreme Northern Luzon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the storm was last located 820 kilometers east of Northern Luzon, moving west-northwest at 30 kph, with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph and gusts of up to 80 kph.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals No. 1 and 2 were raised over several areas in Luzon.

Authorities warned of possible flooding and landslides as rains persist due to the storm and the enhanced southwest monsoon.
