The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has expressed grief over the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who drowned on June 8, 2026, in Dipaculao, Aurora, and said it will review safety protocols and await the results of ongoing investigations.

In a statement posted Sunday, June 14, the league extended condolences to the families, teammates, coaches and the Ateneo community, describing the incident as a “profound loss” and saying it stands in solidarity with those mourning the two students.

The UAAP said it will consider findings from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the concerned member school, noting that only limited details have so far been officially confirmed.

It added that it is closely monitoring developments and will refer all relevant information to its Rules and Disciplinary Committee, composed of representatives from the league’s member schools, once investigations are completed.

“The safety, well-being, and holistic development of student-athletes are at the heart of the UAAP’s inherent mission,” the league said, adding that it is committed to learning from the tragedy and strengthening safeguards for student-athletes.

The UAAP said it will enforce sanctions in cases of protocol breaches following due process, review and revise policies if needed, and expand access to mental health and support services for athletes, coaches and staff.

“This difficult moment has reminded us that the care and protection of our student athletes are paramount,” the statement said, adding that the league remains committed to fostering a sporting environment grounded in safety, accountability and concern for member institutions.

Baterbonia’s remains arrived in Davao, where the Ateneo de Davao University community held a Holy Mass and eulogy at the Christ the King Chapel of the Ateneo de Davao Senior High School Bangkal Campus on Friday, June 12, in honor of the late student-athlete Rene Clert Baterbonia. His family and friends attended the service.

Meanwhile, Adili’s remains were brought to the Ateneo campus on Saturday morning for a candle-light service in his honor.
