Ateneo de Manila University has announced the wake and candlelight service for student-athlete Divine Adili, who was among two student-athletes who died earlier this week in an alleged team-building activity after drowning in Dipaculao, Aurora.
The university invited the community to gather in prayer and remembrance following his passing.
In a statement, Ateneo said Adili’s journey brought him far from his home country of Nigeria, where he found a second home among teammates, classmates, coaches and friends.
“He made a lasting impact through the warmth of his presence, the friendships he formed, and the joy he brought to the communities he became part of,” Ateneo said.
The university said it joins those mourning his loss in the Philippines, Nigeria and beyond.
The Candlelight Service, a Nigerian tradition similar to a wake, will begin on June 13 at the Immaculate Conception Chapel at Ateneo’s Loyola Campus in Quezon City.
Viewing will run daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., while a Mass will be held at 6 p.m.
“The Ateneo community is invited to join … as we gather in prayer and remembrance,” the statement read.
Ateneo also urged the public to keep Adili, his family and all who mourn his passing in their thoughts and prayers, as it entrusts him “to God’s loving mercy and embrace.”
