Former senator Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes IV has reiterated his support for Senator Risa Hontiveros should she decide to run for president in the 2028 elections, saying he believes she is the strongest choice based on their assessment of potential candidates.

Speaking on DZRH’s Damdaming Bayan on Thursday, April 23, Trillanes said Hontiveros stands out among several qualified figures being considered.

“Base sa pagkikilatis namin, si Senator Risa Hontiveros po ang susuportahan po namin,” Trillanes said.

He added that while other potential candidates are also qualified, including Senator Bam Aquino and former Vice President and now Naga City mayor Leni Robredo, his group prefers Hontiveros because of her advocacy and stance on key issues.

“Bukod sa kwalipikasyon, lahat naman sila qualified si Sen. Bam, Mayor Leni, Sen. Risa qualified. Pero ito pong si Sen. Risa, ito tumitindig po ito, pinaglalaban niya ‘yun tama. ‘Yun po ang mas gugustuhin natin na magiging presidente,” he said.

“Pinaglalaban ‘yung ordinaryong Pilipino, at pinaglalaban ‘yung tama,” he added.

Trillanes also ruled out a return to electoral politics, saying he does not plan to run for the Senate again and will instead focus on supporting other candidates.

“Hindi na po, tayo ay magsu-support na lang, kasi importante ito. Ang darating na halalan, nakapa-importanteng ‘yugto ng bansa natin ito. Kailangan hindi po tayo magkamali,” he said.

Meanwhile, earlier statements attributed to Robredo indicated that she is eyeing a second term as Naga City mayor and has no plans to seek a national post in the 2028 elections.
