Schools should remain safe places for children to learn, and not where they experience fear and violence, said Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo, according to a Tuesday report.

As chair of the House Committee on Basic Education, Romulo’s statement comes in response to the June 22 school shooting incident in Tacloban City, reported RH 12 Milky Rigonan.

Romulo said this incident should serve as a “wake-up call” for tightened security measures in schools and a reminder that children are not only the responsibility of their schools but of their parents.

The lawmaker said that mental health concerns, bullying, and gun safety must be dealt with appropriately.

Two minors, aged 14 and 15, opened fire in a classroom, killing three and injuring 15. Five others sustained injuries not caused by bullets, according to a report by RH 32 Jimmy Angay-Angay.

Prior to this, a stabbing incident at a school in Cavite was reported, along with other incidents of school violence that received little media attention.
