Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano declared that the Senate remains on track to convene as an impeachment court on Monday, May 18, amid heightened tensions surrounding recent security incidents involving law enforcement presence during Senate operations.
Cayetano said the chamber is prepared to proceed with constitutional impeachment proceedings, stressing that the process will follow established Senate rules and remain impartial.
“Hindi po kami magko-convict dahil lang sa politika. Hindi rin po kami mag-a-acquit dahil sa politika. Impeachment trial ang nasa Konstitusyon, ’yun po ang balak naming gawin,” he said during a Facebook Live on Friday, May 15.
He confirmed that the Senate has already transmitted formal communication to the House of Representatives regarding the impeachment timeline, placing the matter within the order of business for upcoming sessions.
Cayetano added that the chamber is ready to act as an impeachment court once procedural requirements are completed, despite what he described as attempts to mischaracterize internal Senate developments.
He also warned against linking Senate leadership adjustments to efforts to derail impeachment proceedings, saying such narratives are not based on fact.
“Lahat po ng kinakalap nila na ito ay para protektahan ang isang tao ay hindi katotohanan,” he said.
The Senate President emphasized that senators have agreed during caucus deliberations not to raise objections that would delay the impeachment process.
