Detained Sen. Rodante Marcoleta was transferred from the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital to the University of the Philippines–Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) in Manila on Tuesday morning for a court-mandated independent medical assessment.
According to a report of RH Edniel Parrosa, Marcoleta, 72, was in a wheelchair, wearing a protective vest and handcuffs, as officers from the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) escorted him to a police coaster at around 11:15 a.m.
The transfer follows a July 13 resolution from the Sandiganbayan Third Division ordering the anti-graft court's directive to evaluate the senator's health condition amid his continued confinement at the police hospital.
Acting PNP spokesperson PCol. Allen Rae Co said the security measures, including the handcuffs and protective gear, are part of the standard protocol for any individual under police custody.
Security was heavily reinforced at the receiving facility in Manila, where personnel from the Manila Police District Special Weapons and Tactics (MPD-SWAT) unit were deployed outside the UP-PGH premises ahead of the senator's arrival to secure the area, as reported by RH Tina Nolasco
The Sandiganbayan's resolution directed both PNP-CIDG officials and PNP medical personnel to bring Marcoleta to the state-run hospital on July 14 for the medical evaluation.
