The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is now investigating intelligence reports concerning alleged security threats at the Senate, with officials saying the matter may be connected to possible destabilization efforts against the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

According to a report by RH Jecelle Ricafort on DZRH's Dos Por Dos, NBI Director Atty. Melvin Matibag said there are already validated reports regarding the threats, while other pieces of information continue to undergo verification.

Matibag have also advised Senate President Pro Tempore Win Gatchalian to strengthen security protocols within the upper chamber and coordinate closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) for additional protective measures.

According to Matibag, initial findings suggest that the reported threats may have political undertones and could be linked to efforts aimed at destabilizing the current administration.

He added that certain individuals allegedly involved are believed to be attempting to create unrest to advance specific political interests, though he did not disclosed to name them.

Gatchalian earlier said that based on intelligence information, the threats may be connected to the so-called “18 maleta boys,” allegedly former bagmen linked to resigned Ako Bicol Partylist Representative Zaldy Co of the Ako Bicol Partylist.

In response to the reported threats, security measures around the Senate have been tightened. Authorities have increased screening protocols, including stricter inspections of vehicles entering the premises using under-vehicle mirrors and enhanced security checks at entry points.
