Senators have received intelligence reports about possible security threats to the Senate, prompting tighter security measures at the institution, Senate Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian said.
Speaking on DZRH’s “Dos Por Dos,” Gatchalian said information relayed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) indicated that potential threats could arise within Senate premises, leading officials to adjust security protocols.
“Ayon sa NBI, may mga intelligence na ipinasa sa atin na may mga banta na maaaring mangyari sa Senado,” Gatchalian said.
He said the Office of the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms has been directed to enforce stricter monitoring and security measures to ensure the safety of lawmakers and employees.
Gatchalian emphasized that security efforts are focused not only on senators but also on the institution’s workforce.
“Importante rin ang kaayusan ng aming tanggapan. Hindi lang natin pinoprotekahan isa o dalawang senador, 24 na senador ang pinaprotektahan natin at halos 2,000 kawani,” he said.
The acting Senate chief added that coordination with intelligence agencies, particularly the NBI, is ongoing to ensure continuous information gathering and preparedness.
He declined to disclose details about the nature or source of the threats, citing security concerns, but stressed the importance of taking all intelligence reports seriously.
“Hindi tayo pwedeng maging kampante dahil kung may intelligence information dapat seryosohin. At lahat ng banta dapat seryosohin kaya nag-aadjust rin kami,” he said.
Gatchalian also did not confirm whether the reported threats were linked to separate intelligence reports discussed in a recent security meeting involving concerns about possible unrest ahead of Independence Day.
He reiterated that the priority remains safeguarding the Senate, its officials and personnel.
The Senate of the Philippines has not reported any specific incident, but authorities said preventive measures are being strengthened to avoid any potential security breach.
