A satellite image analyzed by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) showed that an estimated 28.6 hectares of land have been burned in a landfill fire in Navotas that began on April 10, authorities said.
The image, captured on April 16 at 10:33 a.m. local time, indicated that about 28.58 hectares — or roughly 285,800 square meters — had been affected by the fire, according to PhilSA. The burned area is slightly larger than the Quezon Memorial Circle.
PhilSA said the map was generated using the near infrared band of a Sentinel-2C satellite image. The agency noted that its analysis is subject to field validation.
The information was shared with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) to support ongoing monitoring efforts and help prioritize response operations in affected areas.
PhilSA said its satellite-based maps and images provide wide-area coverage, enabling authorities to make informed decisions during disasters and improve response coordination.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Works and Highways said it has deployed heavy equipment to help contain the fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill, which has been burning for several days and affecting nearby communities.
