Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Wednesday that the student suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University may have been influenced or radicalized through Roblox, particularly through chat groups associated with the online gaming platform.

Remulla said authorities could not determine with certainty whether Roblox influenced the student, but investigators had a high degree of confidence that the game and its online chat environment may have played a role in the Aug. 18 shooting.

He stressed that Roblox itself is not inherently dangerous but raised concerns about interactions and chat groups accessible through the platform, which he said could expose young users to radicalizing content.

“Roblox in itself is not a dangerous game. It is the chat group that is beside it, doon nagkakaroon ng radicalization.”

Remulla called on Congress to consider measures to regulate children's access to first-person shooter games and online platforms, citing Australia's approach to restricting social media access for minors.

“I call upon Congress again to help us control and curb the use of first-person shooter games that influence these young minds.”

Authorities also found that the student had allegedly livestreamed the shooting on a website identified by Remulla as ‘WatchPeopleDie’, which he said suggested the suspect intended to show the act to an online audience.

“It gives us a scenario na sa kanyang intent ay mapakita sa mundo ang kanyang ginagawa.”

Remulla said the manner in which the shooting was carried out also resembled a first-person shooter video game.

The student allegedly shot himself after the attack, authorities said.

The Ateneo de Zamboanga University shooting on Aug. 18 left two people dead and nine others injured, according to initial reports.

It was the second school shooting reported in the Philippines in recent months, following a June shooting incident at a school in Tacloban.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the Zamboanga shooting and the possible role of online platforms and content in influencing the suspect.
