Davao City Rep. Omar Duterte on Thursday called on the national government, local government units and the Philippine National Police to intensify anti-criminality efforts following the killing of a motorcycle rider by his passenger in Caloocan City.

Duterte said the incident highlights growing concerns over public safety, particularly for workers in the transport sector who face risks while earning a living.

“Hindi natin matatanggap na ang mga tapat at nagsisikap nating mga riders, na nagtatrabaho lamang para sa kanilang pamilya, ay kailangang mangamba para sa kanilang buhay at kaligtasan mula sa mga masasamang loob,” Duterte said in a statement.

He urged authorities and communities to work together to prevent similar incidents and strengthen vigilance against crime.

“Panawagan ko sa lahat ng ating mga LGU, PNP, at iba pang sektor ng lipunan: magkaisa tayo at palakasin ang ating pagbabantay laban sa kriminalidad,” he said.

The lawmaker also pressed the national administration to take “decisive and urgent action” to address what he described as a rising threat to public safety, emphasizing the need for a more coordinated strategy to secure communities and protect citizens.

Duterte expressed sympathy for the victim’s family, noting that the slain rider left behind a young child. He said justice must be served and called on the public to cooperate with authorities by reporting suspicious activities.

Initial reports state that the suspect has been apprehended by the Malabon City Police and is now detained at the Malabon City Police Station.

The 43-year-old suspect is reportedly facing multiple charges including violations of the New Anti-Carnapping Act of 2016, robbery, and homicide.
