PNP submits school security recommendations to DepEd following series of violent incidents
by Elijah Gaven Mitra22 June 2026

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has formally submitted recommendations to the Department of Education (DepEd) aimed at strengthening security in schools nationwide, following a series of violent incidents inside school premises.

Acting PNP spokesperson Police Colonel Allen Rae Co said the proposals include strengthening coordination with barangays and other force multipliers to help enhance on-ground security in schools. He stressed that police personnel are restricted from entering school campuses, which are considered “zones of peace,” in line with existing protocols.

“We’ve already given our recommendations to the DepEd regarding how to obtain security in our schools… we understand that it’s not in the budget, such as X-ray machines, metal detectors, and hiring new security guards, but there are alternatives,” Co said.

The PNP also cited budget constraints as a challenge in implementing additional security measures such as metal detectors and hiring more school security personnel.

PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has also directed all field commanders to intensify security operations around schools under their jurisdiction.

The move comes after several recent incidents, including separate stabbing cases in General Trias City, Cavite, and a shooting inside San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, which the DepEd has placed under high alert. The agency has assured that medical and psychosocial support is being provided to affected learners while investigations continue.
