Police promptly responded to a reported shooting incident inside the Ateneo de Zamboanga University on Tuesday, Aug. 18, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said.

The Police Regional Office 9 and Zamboanga City Police Office coordinated with school officials and other concerned agencies to ensure the safety and orderly movement of students, faculty members and school personnel, the PNP said.

As of press time, two people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured following the shooting incident at the University's junior high school campus.

Authorities said the situation is now under control as they continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The PNP urged parents and guardians to remain calm and follow the school's advisories, particularly regarding the designated time and arrangements for picking up their children.

Police also appealed to the public to refrain from sharing unverified reports, photos or videos that could cause unnecessary alarm and instead rely on official advisories for accurate information.

The PNP said the safety and well-being of the school community remain a priority and thanked the school administration, parents, guardians and the community for their cooperation as authorities continue to manage the situation and investigate the incident.

“The PNP assures the public that the safety and well-being of the school community remain a priority,” the agency said in a statement.
