The Philippine National Police (PNP) is evaluating whether to implicate several prominent personalities in connection with the Labor Day protests in Manila, according to a Tuesday report.
In a press conference in Camp Crame, Manila Police Legal Service Chief Felino Nebato said these personalities include Kilusang Mayo Uno Chairperson Jerome Adonis and ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio.
Nebato explained that Adonis burned an effigy, violating the Public Assembly Act of 1985. Meanwhile, Tinio was among the protesters in a rally beyond the premises of the designated freedom park.
In a brief statement sent to PNP reporters, Tinio said that the freedom of assembly and expression did not violate any law.
On May 1, nine police officers were reportedly injured due to a number of violent individuals, among them the suspect who punched a patrolman and was purportedly involved in incidents during past protests.
Three days later, the Manila Police District (MPD) tracked down the suspect who assaulted a patrolman along Kalaw Avenue.
Law enforcement has also been working to identify another rallyist who snatched an officer’s phone while he was documenting the protest.
