The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday it is not dismissing the possibility that the reported shooting inside the Senate building may have been staged, as investigators continue to examine physical evidence and the identity of the suspect.
At Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson PBGen Randulf Tuaño said investigators from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) noted what they described as a “mataas o pataas” (high or upward) trajectory of bullet impacts at the Senate site, prompting further scrutiny of the circumstances of the incident.
Authorities said all angles remain under consideration, including the possibility that the shooting may have been deliberately staged, as the incident occurred amid heightened tensions linked to a reported attempt to serve an International Criminal Court (ICC)-related arrest warrant on Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.
“Kasama po lahat ng anggulo na matatanggap ng Philippine National Police,” Tuaño said, adding that investigators are conducting a separate background check on the suspect.
The PNP also raised questions over the identity of the individual arrested at the scene, who reportedly claimed to be a driver for the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI). Police said they are not immediately accepting the claim and are conducting verification.
Authorities earlier said the suspect is being processed as part of the ongoing investigation, while forensic teams continue to analyze physical evidence recovered from the second floor of the Senate complex, which was cordoned off following the incident.
The shooting took place amid escalating security concerns tied to developments involving the ICC and reports of a possible arrest attempt involving Dela Rosa, prompting increased security presence in and around the Senate.
