The Philippine National Police (PNP) has ordered nationwide simulation exercises to prepare for a possible rise in crime linked to the ongoing oil crisis.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. directed all police units and regional offices to conduct scenario-based training to anticipate the effects of escalating fuel prices.
In an interview at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson PBGen Randulf T. Tuaño said the simulations aim to prepare authorities for various situations, including job losses caused by temporary closures of fuel stations due to limited supply.
PNP data shows that at least 403 gas stations have shut down since tensions in the Middle East intensified, raising concerns over economic disruption.
Tuaño warned that business closures and unemployment could lead to an increase in crimes such as robbery, theft, and looting.
Meanwhile, authorities have already arrested four individuals in Guinobatan, Albay, for the unauthorized sale of petroleum products. Seized from the suspects were fuel supplies worth ₱2.3 million, reportedly sold without proper permits from the Department of Energy (DOE).
The PNP assured the public that proactive measures are in place as it continues to monitor the situation and prevent any potential spike in criminal activities.
