Animal rights group Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) on Wednesday said it will file a case against the mall security guard, who unmercifully tossed a puppy off an footbridge in Quezon City.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, PAWS said it strongly condemned the cruelty of the act.

“The guard’s behavior and the act of killing the puppy is certainly what the Animal Welfare Act seeks to punish. PAWS is committed to file a case and hold accountable the person responsible for this horrific cruelty,” it said.

PAWS said it is now in contact with the witnesses and their affidavits will help in filing the case.

It expressed its commitment to charge the security guard to hold him accountable.

The animal rights group demanded authorities to conduct an immediate investigation on the incident.

It then asked the concerned citizens to refrain themselves from sending emails as it awaits to receive the copy of the witnesses’ affidavits.

“Thank you for speaking out against animal cruelty,” PAWS said.

On Tuesday, Janine Santos, the witness of the incident, recounted how the security officer threw the puppy off an overpass outside the mall on her Facebook post.

According to Santos, the guard threw this to drive the children away from their premises.

The puppy was immediately rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic but was declared dead on arrival.

In a statement, the management of SM North EDSA said it ordered the dismissal of the security guard and he is ban to serve any SM malls nationwide.

It said that it directed its security agency to conduct an investigation.

"As a pet-friendly establishment, we strongly condemn any acts that endanger or harm the lives of animals," the SM North managmeent stressed.
