Security was tightened at Malacañang Palace on Tuesday morning, June 30, as the Iglesia ni Cristo held gatherings at the EDSA People Power Monument and Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.
According to a report by RH Leth Narciso, only one entrance was open to the public and government personnel as authorities monitored protest activities in Metro Manila. The General Solano Street entrance and the main gate of the Malacañang compound were closed as of Tuesday morning.
As of 6:00 a.m., no barricades had been set up along Solano Street, but police officers were deployed in the area to maintain security.
Motorists and visitors entering the Palace compound were directed to use the J.P. Laurel gate, which remained open. Only one lane was accessible for both incoming and outgoing vehicles, resulting in heavier-than-usual traffic around the Malacañang complex.
In line with this, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. cancelled his scheduled engagements, including the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) luncheon in Makati, on Tuesday morning, June 30, to monitor the situation surrounding the mass rally along EDSA, Malacañang said.
Moreover, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Marcos is closely monitoring the situation along EDSA amid disruptions caused by the ongoing Iglesia ni Cristo rally.
The heightened security came after members of the religious organization INC held a pre-dawn gathering at the EDSA People Power Monument, prompting temporary road closures and causing traffic congestion in several parts of Metro Manila.
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), about 500 rally participants and 30 vehicles were marching along the northbound lane of EDSA from Corinthian toward White Plains as of 3:48 a.m.
The activity prompted authorities to temporarily close both the northbound and southbound lanes of EDSA at White Plains to ensure public safety and manage traffic flow.
