Malacañang announced the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels starting 3 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, in the National Capital Region (NCR) and several provinces due to heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Maymay and the enhanced Southwest Monsoon (Habagat).

The suspension covers NCR, Abra, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, and Zambales, following the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

This was based on Memorandum Circular No. 121.

However, it noted that “agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services.”

“The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads,” the memorandum stated.

It also said localized cancellation or suspension of classes and work in government offices in other areas may be implemented by their respective local chief executives in accordance with existing laws and regulations.

The Palace urged the public to continue monitoring official government advisories and prioritize safety amid the effects of the storm and monsoon rains.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, PAGASA reported that Tropical Storm Maymay slightly intensified while moving erratically over the waters west of Ilocos Sur.

The center of Maymay was located about 160 kilometers west-southwest of Sinait, Ilocos Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 90 kilometers per hour. It was moving slowly northeastward.

PAGASA said Maymay is expected to move eastward and may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union Wednesday night or early Thursday, August 6.

After landfall, the storm is expected to traverse Northern and Central Luzon.
