The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has issued subpoenas to Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) men's basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and more than 20 others in connection with the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

In a press conference on Monday, NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed that Baldwin, several Ateneo athletes, coaches, and university officials have been ordered to appear before investigators as part of the agency’s ongoing probe into the tragic drowning incident.

“Tomorrow, we will subpoena Coach Tab Baldwin, the Ateneo players, and some university officials,” Matibag said during a media roundtable.

“Once they come here, we will ask questions. They will be the one to shed light on the what really happened and to determine kung sino talaga ‘yung may pananagutan o kung wala namang pananagutan,” he added.

According to the NBI-Homicide Division, coaches and players from the basketball team have been directed to appear before investigators at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The investigation stems from the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili, who drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.

Meanwhile, Baldwin and Ateneo officials had also been instructed to appear before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in a separate inquiry. However, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said Baldwin failed to attend the scheduled proceeding.

The veteran coach is currently on leave while Ateneo conducts its own internal investigation into the drowning incident.
