The top management of the Ateneo basketball team, led by coach Tab Baldwin, has been subpoenaed and summoned to Camp Crame for a fact-finding investigation into the university’s drowning incident, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.
Remulla said the summons issued on Monday was part of a “fact-finding exercise” and not a criminal proceeding in connection with the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who were involved in a drawing incident in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
“Today we subpoenaed the top management of the Ateneo Basketball Team headed by coach Tab Baldwin,” Remulla said. “Last week, the events unfolded mostly was a fault-finding exercise. Today is a fact-finding exercise. We are not here to arrest. We are not here to charge but merely to gather the facts.”
He added that investigators are seeking to determine the sequence of events and authorizations behind the matter under review.
“Kukunin lang namin talaga kung anong nangyari, kung sinong nag-authorize, kung paano sila pumunta, kung sino nag-order lahat yun kukunin namin,” Remulla said. “I repeat this is a fact-finding mission, hindi siya fault-finding. We will give the results later on in due time once we investigate everyone.”
At the same time, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the country’s premier collegiate athletic league, said it is conducting its own investigation, alongside initiatives and information gathering from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the concerned member school.
Authorities noted that only limited details have so far been officially confirmed as multiple agencies continue their parallel reviews.
