The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has recommended has recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) file charges against former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team head coach Tab Baldwin and 11 other individuals in connection with the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

The recommendation came after the NBI Homicide Division completed its investigation into the drowning incident that claimed the lives of two Ateneo basketball players during a team training activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8.

The NBI-Homicide Division confirmed to DZRH News that it has endorsed to the Department of Justice (DOJ) the filing of two counts of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against Baldwin, six assistant coaches, and one physical therapist.

The bureau also recommended charges of simple negligence resulting in two counts of homicide against Ateneo’s athletic director and three resort owners where the team activity was held.

NBI Homicide Division Chief Romeo Astrero Jr. and other agency personnel personally went to the DOJ on Monday, July 13, to submit the case recommendations.

A total of 12 individuals are facing possible prosecution over the incident involving the Ateneo Blue Eagles training activity that resulted in the deaths of Baterbonia and Adili.

More than 20 individuals were questioned during the investigation after being subpoenaed by the NBI. Among those who appeared before investigators were Baldwin and ADMU President Rev. Fr. Roberto "Bobby" Yap.
