The legal counsel of Atty. Mans Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte, on Monday denied allegations that P6.7 billion worth of transactions were linked to the couple’s bank accounts, calling the claim “fake and a blatant lie.”

In a press briefing, Carpio's counsel, Atty. Peter Paul Danao said Carpio rejected the information presented by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) during a House Justice Committee impeachment hearing on April 22.

“Atty. Carpio said that the ‘6 billion is fake and a blatant lie’—wala siyang ganung pera,” Danao said.

He added that the public was allegedly misled by the presentation of the figures without proper explanation.

“Pinaniwala nila ang mga tao na mayroon daw P6 billion pero hindi nila ipinaliwanag kung paano nila nakuha ito,” Danao said.

He also described the figures as a “half-truth,” arguing that the method of computation for the reported transaction total was not disclosed.

Danao further dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, saying claims of vast wealth attributed to the Duterte family were being used as “propaganda.“

He stressed that Carpio was not present at the House impeachment proceedings and had no access to the AMLC report at the time.

“Wala naman si Atty. Mans doon kasi hindi naman po siya parte ng impeachment. So, there’s no way he can refute it, in the first place, he does not have a copy of the report,“ Danao said.

“Si Atty. Carpio ay pribadong indibidwal, hindi naman siya parte ng hearing. Kaya nga napilitan siyang magsampa ng kaso dahil nga, bilang private individual, pati siya nadadamay. He is just only enforcing his right,“ he added.

He further argued that Carpio, as a private citizen, was being unfairly drawn into a political issue, prompting legal action to defend his rights.

“Atty. Carpio is not part of the impeachment proceedings. So he's a private citizen. So he doesn't want to be embroiled in this political circus. More importantly, to disclose his private information,“ the legal counsel said.

“But what we can say is that he does not have that P6B amount that is being publicly portrayed as pure propaganda in the media. So wala po siyang ganung pera. But what exactly is the amount, of course, we cannot divulge that,“ he added.

The lawyer also raised concerns over the alleged release of bank-related information, saying it could undermine confidence in the banking system.

“Kung kaya ng AMLC na gawin ito sa bank records ng isang abogado, isang asawa ng pangalawang mataas na opisyal ng Pilipinas na kayang kalkalin ang lahat ng mga dumaan sa bangko mo…paano pa tayong mga mahihirap, mabubulatlat ang ating bank accounts dahil lang kalaban ka ng gobyerno,” he emphasized.

“You cannot weaponize the AMLC, dahil mismo sa AMLC…MLC cannot be used for political propaganda and political persecution and harassment,” he added.

The clarification comes after AMLC Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura told lawmakers during the impeachment hearing that banks had flagged 33 suspicious transactions and 630 covered transactions amounting to P6.7 billion involving Duterte and Carpio.

In response, Carpio and his legal team have filed criminal complaints before the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office against officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the AMLC, and several members of the House Committee on Justice.

The complaints cite alleged violations of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, bank secrecy laws, and the Data Privacy Act.

Danao earlier said the legal action was triggered by what they described as the improper disclosure of highly sensitive financial information involving a private individual.

House Justice Committee members have since criticized the filing, calling it an attempt to block scrutiny and stating that the committee intends to continue its proceedings despite the complaint.
