Malacañang has distanced itself from the recent tensions in the Senate following a heated exchange between lawmakers that led to a minority bloc walkout over a proposed rule allowing online or remote voting in the chamber.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro on Wednesday, May 27, said the administration is not intervening in the internal dispute but acknowledged that the controversy highlights questions on whether public officials are acting in the interest of the people.

“Bayan o sarili, mamili ka,” Castro said, quoting a line from the film "Heneral Luna," as she underscored the importance of public accountability among elected leaders.

Responding to questions on the minority senators’ walkout, Castro said the Senate’s rules appear to be clear and that proposed changes should be carefully scrutinized.

“Lumalabas po talaga na maayos naman ang mga rules at nais lamang nila itong baguhin,” she said.

She also cited past Senate practices and remarks from lawmakers regarding attendance and participation issues, raising questions on whether remote voting could be justified under certain circumstances.

Castro pointed to previous discussions involving Senate President Alan Cayetano and Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, noting arguments raised in earlier Senate debates about attendance and security concerns.

“So, ito ba ay isa sa mga justifiable reasons na mapabanggit para makapagboto online? So, ito ay talaga malaking question,” she said.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Castro stressed that Senate proceedings remain an internal matter and the executive branch will not interfere with its decisions.

“Ang mga nagaganap sa Senado ay kanilang pagdedesisyon at hindi naman ito panghihimasukan ng Pangulo [Marcos Jr.] at ng administrasyon,” she said.

The Palace maintained, however, that the issue presents an opportunity for the public to assess whether leaders are prioritizing national interest or political considerations.
