Filipino films "Magellan," "Food Delivery," and ''Vox Humana" did not advance to the final nominations following the release of the official shortlists for the 98th Academy Awards, announced by the Academy on December 17.
Lav Diaz’s historical epic "Magellan" was unable to secure a nomination in the 'Best International Feature Film' category, which narrowed its shortlist to 86 entries. Despite this, the film previously earned international recognition after winning the Golden Spike for Best Picture at Spain’s Valladolid International Film Festival.
Meanwhile, Baby Ruth Villarama’s documentary "Food Delivery" did not make it to the final nominees for 'Best Documentary Feature Film' from a pool of 201 eligible submissions. The film had earlier been selected as the Philippines’ official entry to the 98th Academy Awards.
Don Eblahan’s "Vox Humana" also missed a nomination in the 'Best Live Action Short Film' category, where 207 films were considered. The short film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2024.
Although none of the Filipino entries secured an Oscar nomination this year, their inclusion in the shortlist process highlights the continued growth, global reach, and increasing recognition of Philippine cinema on the international stage.
