The Senate’s convening followed the transmittal of the Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives on May 13, marking the official start of impeachment proceedings in the upper chamber. Initial procedural actions were undertaken as the chamber prepares to hear the case.
Lacson described the development as a “breath of fresh air” compared to the tense conditions in the Senate during the previous week, which included reported security disruptions and a shooting incident inside the Senate compound that temporarily heightened concerns within the institution.
The senator also reiterated the importance of public awareness and scrutiny as the impeachment process moves forward amid ongoing political tension.
Meanwhile, the Senate has begun internal reorganization, including the naming of new committee chairs, while several key leadership positions remain pending ahead of a scheduled May 19 vote. Reports also indicate shifting alignments in the chamber, with Senators Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri and JV Ejercito joining the minority bloc ahead of the proceedings.
