Senator Risa Hontiveros said the Senate must first restore order and credibility within the institution before discussions on future political ambitions and electoral plans can move forward.

Speaking during a press conference on May 14, Hontiveros said the recent tensions inside the Senate, including the reported gunfire incident and disputes involving Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, exposed serious issues affecting democratic processes.

“Right now, the urgent task is to consolidate democratic forces,” Hontiveros said when asked about speculation regarding a possible presidential run.

She explained that the current situation requires lawmakers to prioritize governance and institutional stability over politics.

“Kailangan talaga ilagay namin sa ayos,” she said, referring to the need to restore order within the Senate.

Hontiveros also criticized what she described as actions that may compromise democracy, including perceived efforts to delay impeachment proceedings and irregularities involving legal processes tied to Dela Rosa.

“Kapag ordinaryong mamamayan ang humaharap sa warrant, mabilis pa sa alas kuwatro ang pag-serve. That is also a compromise of democracy,” she said.

The senator further called the harassment of former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III outside the Senate "terrible" after supporters allegedly surrounded his vehicle and hurled insults as he exited the compound.

“Can you imagine anyone doing that? Respect has been devalued,” Hontiveros said.

She also reiterated the need for accountability over the events that unfolded inside and outside the Senate, including the reported security lapses and tensions involving protesters and lawmakers.

“Definitely, someone should be held accountable,” she said.

Despite the political uncertainty, Hontiveros maintained that the Senate’s priority should remain focused on restoring stability, upholding the rule of law, and protecting the institution’s dignity.
