Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has filed a resolution in the Senate seeking to honor Filipina tennis star Alex Eala for her historic campaign in the 2026 Wimbledon Championships.

Go, who chairs the Senate Committee on Sports, cited Eala’s breakthrough performance on the global stage, where she became the first Filipina to reach the second week of Wimbledon. He described her run as both “historic” and “inspiring,” underscoring the pride it brought to the country.

In a statement, the senator expressed admiration for Eala’s determination, echoing her personal motto about continuous growth and perseverance. He also reiterated his long-standing message of encouragement to Filipino athletes, urging them to keep pushing forward in their respective fields.

Eala’s Wimbledon journey ended in the Round of 16 after a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 loss to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini on Monday, July 6 (Philippine time) at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in London.

Despite the exit, Eala delivered one of the tournament’s biggest upsets in the third round, defeating defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek, 7-6 (9), 6-2 — a victory widely regarded as among the greatest in Philippine tennis history.

Her strong Wimbledon showing caps a breakthrough 2026 season that saw her win the WTA 125 Birmingham Open title, partner with tennis legend Venus Williams at the Bad Homburg Open, and rise to a career-high world ranking of No. 28, according to live Women’s Tennis Association rankings.

The proposed Senate resolution seeks to formally recognize Eala’s achievements and contributions to Philippine sports.
