Alex Eala saw her breakthrough campaign at Wimbledon Championships come to an end Monday night (PH time), falling to Jasmine Paolini, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, in the Round of 16.
Paolini held her nerve late in the deciding set, breaking Eala for a 5-3 lead before serving out the match behind a series of strong first serves, including an ace that helped seal the victory.
Eala, 21, showed resilience after dropping the opening set. The Filipina rallied in the second, stringing together five consecutive games to overturn a deficit and force a decider, capitalizing on a stretch of unforced errors from Paolini.
The third set, however, swung back in favor of the Italian, who regained control with steady baseline play and timely winners. Eala stayed within striking distance, leveling at 3-3 after trading holds, but faltered in the closing stages as Paolini converted the crucial break.
Earlier, Paolini dictated much of the first set, building a 5-2 cushion with aggressive net play and consistent serving. Eala fought back with a late break to trim the deficit, but Paolini closed it out, winning 75 percent of her second-serve points in the opener.
Despite the loss, Eala’s run marked her deepest showing yet at Wimbledon and underscored her continued rise on the women’s tour.
