Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon has ordered the immediate installation of barricades and a continuous structural assessment of the Aquino Bridge in Tarlac City after a portion of it collapsed amid continuous rains brought in by the southwest monsoon, or Habagat, and strong water flow in the Tarlac River.
During his inspection of the damaged bridge, Dizon said engineers from Manila had been dispatched to assess possible measures to restore limited access to the structure.
“Nagpapunta na ko ng mga engineers mula sa Manila, para i-assess kung anong pwede nating gawing mabilis para lang maging passable sa light vehicles itong Aquino Bridge,” Dizon said.
The collapse prompted authorities to close off passage through the bridge to ensure the safety of motorists and residents.
The Tarlac City government previously announced that the Aquino Bridge remains closed, while the Sitio Molave Y-junction in Barangay San Isidro is temporarily restricted to trucks, heavy equipment, and buses heading toward the bridge.
Meanwhile, residents are still allowed to use the road, according to the local government advisory.
Authorities have coordinated with concerned agencies to monitor the damaged structure and determine the extent of the collapse.
The Agana Bridge is being continuously monitored, as it serves as the primary alternative route for motorists.
Dizon’s orders focus on securing the damaged area while engineers determine whether portions of the Aquino Bridge can be safely made passable for light vehicles.
Motorists have been advised to follow traffic and safety directives from authorities and await further announcements regarding access and alternative routes as structural assessments continue.
The Tarlac City government reiterated that public safety remains the priority as agencies work to assess the bridge and address the damage caused by the heavy rains and strong river currents.
Dizon's orders follow President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to expedite government response to damaged infrastructure caused by the recent weather disturbances.
