The Department of Justice (DOJ), Presidential Communications Office (PCO), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to bolster the government’s campaign against disinformation and deepfakes in the country.
In a Monday report by RH 29 Boy Gonzales, the DOJ said this was an important measure in combating the persistent circulation of false information on social media and other platforms, which could lead to division and confusion among Filipinos.
Moreover, the DOJ emphasized that the agreement does not target free speech but aims to impede the spread of criminal disinformation that undermines democratic processes.
Moreover, the agency wants to promote media literacy among the wider public and carry out public information campaigns to improve Filipinos’ discernment of information online.
There are also oversight and redress mechanisms in place to ensure proper implementation of the program and prevent any abuse.
Government agencies are presently coordinating to strengthen the country’s digital security and protect its citizens against false information.
This comes amid supposedly false reports regarding President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s health, which have been repudiated by the PCO and the Malacañang Press Corps.
