The Department of Education (DepEd) expressed "grave concern" over the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga junior highschool campus on Tuesday, August 18, which reportedly left two individuals dead.
In an official statement, DepEd said it “stands with” the university community during this difficult time and is ready to extend necessary support to affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities.
“DepEd stands with the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this difficult time and is ready to extend whatever support and assistance we can to the affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities,” the agency said.
DepEd also said it is coordinating with mental health partners to provide Psychological First Aid and psychosocial support to those affected by the incident.
The agency urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and sharing sensitive photos, videos, or details about the incident, particularly since minors were involved.
The shooting occurred inside the school campus in Barangay Tumaga early Tuesday.
According to the Police Regional Office 9, two people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
The alleged shooter was also a minor and a high school student, while the other victim was identified as a Grade 10 student.
Police recovered two 9mm pistols and empty shells of the same caliber from the crime scene, based on the initial investigation.
Meanwhile, the father of the alleged shooter, who is a Customs police chief in Zamboanga, has been relieved from his post, Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno told DZRH News.
