In a twist that captivated both pageant enthusiasts and the LGBTQIA+ community, Miss Philippines Earth 2025 and Miss Earth 2025 first runner-up Joy Barcoma finally received the farewell walk many believed she deserved—not on the Miss Philippines Earth stage, but before thousands of supporters at the Love Laban PH Festival 2026 on Saturday night, June 27, at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Known by fans as the country's "Pambansang Jusa," Barcoma made a surprise appearance in a flowing white gown accented with a rainbow sash, transforming what could have been a quiet conclusion to her reign into one of the festival's most memorable moments.
Her appearance came after the Miss Philippines Earth Organization did not include her in the pageant's coronation night in Bukidnon, where she was also unable to perform the traditional farewell walk or personally pass on her crown to her successor. Instead, the crowning of the new queen was performed by Miss Earth 2025 Natálie Puškinová of the Czech Republic.
Rumors, Speculation, and a Public Response
The development followed days of online speculation surrounding Barcoma's absence from the national pageant finale. Rumors circulated that the organization had allegedly become dissatisfied with her level of commitment during her reign, with some social media posts even alleging a breach of contract.
However, Barcoma publicly dismissed several claims in a Facebook comment, denying accusations that she neglected her advocacy work or owed financial obligations to the organization.
On the morning of the coronation, Barcoma confirmed she would not be taking her customary farewell walk through an emotional social media post featuring herself in her intended farewell gown.
In her farewell message, she reflected on her reign with gratitude rather than resentment.
"Tonight, I may not have a farewell walk. But perhaps that is the greatest reminder that a legacy is never measured by the number of steps she takes on stage but by footprints she leaves in the lives of others."
She added:
"Hindi natatapos sa entablado ang pagboses. At hindi limitado ng korona ang adbokasiya."
Love Laban gives Barcoma her moment.
Only hours later, Love Laban PH gave Barcoma the moment many believed she had been denied.
Festival host Kaladkaren (Jervi Wrightson) introduced the beauty queen with a playful but pointed remark that immediately drew cheers from the massive crowd.
"Hindi siya nakapag-final walk. Pero sorry, dito siya magpa-final walk sa Love Laban 2026!"
Encouraged by the hosts to take the entire stage as her own, Barcoma waved to thousands of festival-goers, receiving one of the loudest ovations of the evening.
Addressing the audience, Barcoma expressed her appreciation for the unexpected opportunity.
"I've been waiting for this moment. And I did not expect that I will do it here. Pero maraming salamat because I would always like to do it with people that supported me and that love me and that welcomed me."
She also used the stage to reaffirm her support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
"Nandito tayo lahat para ipaglaban ang ating karapatan... nandito tayo hindi lamang sa performances kundi ipaglaban ang mga gusto nating ipaglaban sa LGBTQIA+ community."
The Queen Who Redefined Her Platform
Throughout her reign, Barcoma distinguished herself as one of the most outspoken titleholders in the pageant's history. Beyond promoting environmental protection, she became widely recognized for speaking against corruption, championing climate action, embracing LGBTQIA+ equality, and redefining what it means to use a beauty pageant platform for civic engagement.
Her witty hosting style, viral online moments, podcast appearances, and television hosting opportunities also introduced Miss Philippines Earth to audiences beyond traditional pageant fans, turning her into one of the organization's most recognizable queens in recent years.
The Hashtag Controversy
The controversy surrounding her departure continued after viewers noticed several unusual hashtags during the Miss Philippines Earth 2026 competition, including "Ungrateful," "Commitment," "Obligation," "Insincere," "Loyalty," and "Opportunist"—a departure from the environmental-themed prompts typically used during the segment.
The hashtags fueled speculation online that they were indirect references to Barcoma, although the organization has not publicly addressed the claims.
Responding to one supportive social media post, Barcoma chose to focus on gratitude.
"Regardless of what these hashtags may imply, my gratitude remains unchanged, and I refuse to carry hate. If this gave anyone peace of mind, then I sincerely hope it did."
A Legacy Beyond the Crown
Meanwhile, Rina Andrea Dela Santos of Ballesteros, Cagayan was crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2026, ushering in a new era for the organization.
For many supporters, however, Joy Barcoma's defining farewell did not happen under the spotlight of a coronation stage. It unfolded before a sea of rainbow flags and thousands of voices celebrating authenticity, equality, and resilience.
Her final walk became more than a pageant tradition—it became a statement that advocacy is not confined to a title or a crown. For many Filipinos, Barcoma's legacy will be remembered not for the stage she left behind but for the communities she inspired and the conversations she courageously chose to lead.
