The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) believes that the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a training session in Dipaculao, Aurora may not have been accidental, as investigators continue to examine possible circumstances surrounding the incident.
CIDG Director PMGen Robert Morico II said initial findings suggest that the athletes and coaching staff were aware of strong sea conditions at the resort when they conducted a walking and stationary jogging exercise on June 8.
According to Morico, aside from Baterbonia and Adili, four other players also reportedly nearly drowned during the same training session but were successfully rescued.
“No, it’s not. Majority of them were in the water. They were aware that the current was strong. They said they were walking and then came to a stationary jog,” Morico said.
Morico also challenged former Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin to cooperate with authorities and attend the ongoing fact-finding investigation into the incident.
“Be man enough to face the investigation… If you are talking about a band of brothers, then you should not turn your back. Help the family attain justice,” he said.
The CIDG has issued a fresh subpoena for Baldwin and other members of the coaching staff, who are expected to appear either on Thursday or Friday.
Authorities have also ordered Baldwin to present any available training footage, including drone recordings, as part of the evidence in the investigation.
“From the start, when they have a formation doon sa resort until the time na nangyari yung incident.,” Morico said, referring to the requested video materials.
The CIDG has yet to release final findings as the investigation continues.
