Active players of the Ateneo Blue Eagles are expected to appear before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Wednesday, June 17, as part of an ongoing fact-finding investigation into the deaths of two players during a team-related boot camp in Aurora province.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa, CIDG Director Police Major General Robert Morico II said the current members of the team roster, along with their parents, had been instructed to proceed to Camp Crame on Wednesday after failing to appear on the original subpoena date set the previous day.
The probe stems from the deaths of junior players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who reportedly attended a boot camp in Aurora on June 8. Authorities are examining possible violations, including hazing or homicide, as part of their inquiry.
According to CIDG, some players had earlier informed investigators of their intent to appear on Wednesday. On Tuesday, 10 members of the Ateneo men’s basketball program already attended the initial round of interviews.
Lawyer VJ Topacio, who represents former players Kymani Ladi and Dom Escobar, said his clients cooperated with investigators and gave sworn statements during questioning.
Authorities said the line of questioning for current players focuses on the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two junior athletes, as well as whether similar practices had allegedly been carried out in previous years within the program’s training system.
Investigators are also looking into whether the deceased players were formally enrolled in the university at the time of the boot camp, as part of efforts to clarify the chain of responsibility and the nature of their participation in the activity.
