The House of Representatives has adopted Resolution No. 1190 honoring Alex Eala for becoming the first Filipina to reach the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam singles event at Wimbledon.

The measure cited Eala’s wins over Renata Zarazúa, Maya Joint and defending champion Iga Świątek before falling to Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round, marking a historic breakthrough for Philippine tennis.

Introduced by Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III and other House leaders, the resolution also highlighted Eala’s strong season, including her WTA 125 title in Birmingham and a semifinal finish in Berlin.

The tribute came as Eala advanced to the quarterfinals of the Washington Open after defeating defending champion Leylah Fernandez.

Lawmakers said the 21-year-old’s rise from junior Grand Slam champion to international contender has brought pride to the country and inspired young Filipinos.

Eala recently defeated defending champion Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 7-6 (1), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Mubadala DC Open on Thursday (Philippine time).

The homebet showed a composed performance highlighted by a dominant opening set and a strong comeback in the second as she moved a step closer to a quarterfinals berth.
