Alex Eala toppled defending champion Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 7-6 (1), to storm into the quarterfinals of the Mubadala DC Open on Thursday (PH Time), delivering a composed and resilient performance highlighted by a dominant opening set and a dramatic comeback in the second.

The victory also served as redemption for the Filipina, who previously lost to Fernandez at the Stuttgart Open in April, making this a comeback win against the Canadian.

Eala dictated play early, breaking Fernandez twice to seize control of the first set. She raced to a 3-0 lead and maintained pressure throughout, closing out the frame 6-2 with a mix of aggressive returns and steady baseline play.

The second set, however, turned into a test of resolve.

Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, found her rhythm and surged ahead with two service breaks, building a commanding 5-1 lead and appearing poised to force a decider. But Eala refused to yield.

Facing the brink, Eala mounted a stunning comeback, stringing together four consecutive games to level the set at 5-5. She continued to apply pressure, holding serve for a 6-5 edge before Fernandez forced a tiebreak.

In the breaker, Eala regained full control. She raced to a 5-1 advantage and never looked back, closing it out 7-1 to seal the straight-sets victory.

The win marks one of the biggest results of Eala’s campaign, as she eliminates the tournament’s reigning champion and advances to the final eight.

Eala will next face a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the quarterfinals as she continues her strong run in the hard-court tournament.
