For the first time in years, the NBA Finals will carry a deeper meaning for Filipino basketball fans — one that goes beyond the chase for a championship.

Jordan Clarkson and rising star Dylan Harper are set to represent the Philippines on basketball’s biggest stage, with both players embracing the rare opportunity to bring pride to a nation where the sport is a way of life.

“Another amazing thing that's happening right now. Definitely inspiring to the Filipino Americans and Filipinos all around the country,” said Clarkson, who has long been a visible figure for Philippine basketball on the global stage. “It’s definitely going to be fun to watch.”

Clarkson, now with the New York Knicks, will face off against Harper’s San Antonio Spurs in a Finals matchup that guarantees a Filipino-linked champion — a moment both players acknowledge as special.

“One of us two taking a championship back home to the Philippines and representing that well,” Clarkson added.

Harper, one of the league’s youngest breakout stars, echoed the sentiment, highlighting the significance of representing a basketball-crazed nation.

“Me and him get to do something really special, represent our country, where we’re from, represent everything — on the biggest stage of basketball,” Harper said.

“Over there in the Philippines, basketball is probably the biggest thing. So we’re very excited and just very blessed to be in this position.”

The Finals appearance marks a milestone for both franchises.

The Spurs are back in the championship series for the first time since 2014 after edging the Oklahoma City Thunder, 111-103, in a decisive Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals on May 31 (Philippine time).

Meanwhile, the Knicks return to the Finals for the first time in 27 years, completing a dominant sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 130-93 victory in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals on May 26 (Philippine time).

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set for Thursday, June 4 (Philippine time), with anticipation building not just in the United States, but across the Philippines, where millions are expected to tune in.
