[Trigger Warning: death, gun violence, school shooting]
The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) has urged the public to stop sharing and reposting videos and photos related to the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University on Tuesday, August 18.
In a video statement, CICC Executive Director Aboy Paraiso expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those who were killed and injured in the shooting.
Paraiso appealed to netizens to refrain from reposting footage of the incident, saying this would prevent the violent act from gaining further attention online.
“Nananawagan kami sa inyo, mga netizens na huwag na hong i-repost ang video kaugnay ng insidente upang hindi na rin mabigyan ng karagdagang audience or atensyon ang mga ganitong uri ng karahasan,” Paraiso said.
He also urged parents to monitor their children's activities on social media, gaming platforms, and messaging applications, particularly minors.
“Sa atin pong mga magulang bantayan po natin ang aktibidad ng ating mga anak sa social media, gaming platforms at messaging platforms lalong-lalo na po ang mga menor de edad,” he said.
“Panatilihin natin bukas ang linya ng komunikasyon sa ating mga tahanan at alamin kung ano ang kanilang pinapanood, sinusundan, kinokonsumo online,” he added.
Paraiso said the CICC is closely monitoring social media activity related to the incident, including footage of the shooting inside the school.
The agency is also coordinating with Meta and other social media platforms to have the videos taken down to prevent them from spreading further, causing panic, or potentially influencing others.
The shooting left two people dead, including the gunman, while nine others were injured.
