Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will preside over a Mass at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Wednesday, Oct. 14, as Pope Leo XIV recovers from surgery, according to the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.
In an online announcement, the dicastery said Tagle, dean of the College of Cardinals, will lead the closing Mass marking the 10th anniversary of the publication of an apostolic exhortation. The Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Rome time.
The announcement comes as the 71-year-old pope faces a significant health setback following surgery to remove part of his right lung. The Vatican said in a medical bulletin that Leo was diagnosed with lung cancer.
On Oct. 9, the cardinal bishops elected Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals, a position that carries key responsibilities in coordinating the college’s work and during a papal transition.
The Pope approved Tagle’s election, succeeding Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who had held the position since January 2020.
Tagle’s appointment as dean places the Filipino cardinal in a key leadership role within the Catholic Church as the pope undergoes medical recovery.
