Pope Leo XIV has approved the election of Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as dean of the College of Cardinals, succeeding Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, who has held the position since January 2020.

According to the Vatican, the Holy Father approved Tagle’s election on October 8, 2026, following the vote of the cardinals of the Order of Bishops.

Tagle currently serves as pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization’s Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches.

Meanwhile, the Pope accepted the resignation of Re, 92, who will retain the title of dean emeritus of the College of Cardinals.

As the new dean, Tagle will assume the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Ostia while retaining his existing title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano.
