The Ateneo Blue Eagles have withdrawn from the remainder of the FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup following the drowning deaths of two student-athletes during a team-building activity in Aurora province, the league confirmed.
In a statement, the Executive Committee of the 19th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup said it had been formally informed of the decision by Ateneo de Manila University to pull out of the tournament.
“Upon continuous discussions and as confirmed with the University’s athletic director Mr. Emmanuel Fernandez, it was deemed appropriate to grant their request out of compassion following the tragic incident,” the league said.
The league extended its condolences to the bereaved families and the Ateneo community, saying it stands with them “as we navigate these tough times.”
The withdrawal comes as Ateneo de Manila University also confirmed it has accepted the resignations of Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Christopher “Epok” Quimpo in the aftermath of the June 8 incident that led to the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
University officials announced the developments on Monday during a press conference led by Ateneo President Fr. Roberto Yap, SJ.
The UAAP, meanwhile, said it will consider findings from ongoing investigations by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG), the Commission on Higher Education, and the concerned member school. It noted that only limited official details have been confirmed so far.
